What amoxicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, clindamycin and doxycycline are used for, and how to take antibiotics safely.

Antibiotics only work on bacteria

Antibiotics treat infections caused by bacteria. They don't work for colds, flu, most sore throats or other viral infections – and taking them when they aren't needed causes side effects and helps bacteria become resistant. All the antibiotics below need a prescription in the US.

Taking antibiotics safely

  • Finish the course exactly as prescribed, even if you feel better.
  • Don't save antibiotics for later or share them.
  • Tell your prescriber about allergies – especially to penicillin – and about all your other medicines.
  • Call your doctor about severe or bloody diarrhea, a rash, or symptoms that don't improve within a few days.
